Early Way; a road dedicated to John Early
-
In 1974, the Loyola University Maryland Board of Trustees voted to name several campus roads after past university presidents. One of these roads was named "Early Way" in honor of John Early, a Jesuit priest who served as Loyola's first president. While serving as president, Early is documented as having rented "servants," a term most likely indicating enslaved persons, to work at Loyola College and/or the adjacent St. Ignatius Church, where he also served as rector.
-
Early Way is a road on Loyola University Maryland's campus that begins at an intersection with Westway, and ends at the parking lot of Loyola Notre Dame Library. It currently lacks street signs identifying it as Early Way; however, earlier photographs and Loyola's current campus map identify it using this name.
