Early, John
-
John Early was a Jesuit priest who served as president of Loyola College and rector of St. Ignatius Church; during his tenure, he rented servants who were likely enslaved.
-
John Early was born in Ireland in 1814 and immigrated to the United States in 1833. He pursued studies at Mount St. Mary's Seminary and Georgetown University, becoming a member of the Society of Jesus in 1834. He spent several subsequent years studying and teaching at Georgetown, and was ordained a priest in 1845. In 1848, he was named president of the College of the Holy Cross, a position he would hold for the next three years. On September 15, 1852, Loyola College opened its doors and Early served as the college's first president. While serving as president, Early is documented as having rented "servants," a term most likely indicating enslaved persons, to work at Loyola College and/or the adjacent St. Ignatius Church, where he also served as rector.
Early left Loyola to serve as president of Georgetown from 1858-1865, and then returned to Loyola College to serve as president from 1866-1870. He then returned to Georgetown, serving as president from 1870 until his death in 1873.
