Title
Confederate Dead Memorial Service; A memorial service to honor the Confederate dead buried at the University Cemetery
Background and Context
The Confederate Dead Memorial Service occurred on May 16, the birthday of the Confederate General Edmund Kirby-Smith. A newspaper account from 1918 relates that the event occurred annually. It is not known when it first or last was held. On this date in 1918, the General Edmund Kirby-Smith chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy led a procession from the University of the South library (Convocation Hall) to the cemetery, accompanied by the Sewanee Military Academy marching band. The memorial service included prayer, music and speeches.
