Title
William M. Wightman Residence Hall; a residence hall named for William M. Wightman
Background and Context
The college planned for a new residence hall and dining room in the mid-1950s, and the board of trustees decided to name the structure in honor of Wofford's founding president, William Wightman. After its demolition, the college used the Wightman name on a newer residence hall.
Physical Description
This four-story brick structure, completed in 1958, had a dining room and lounge on the ground floor and kitchen in the basement, with three floors of 60 student residence hall rooms above. The rooms were arranged in suites, with 4 rooms surrounding a bathroom. Each room opened onto an exterior balcony. When a new dining facility opened in 1969, the main floor was renovated to a canteen and bookstore, and later, to additional housing. The building remained in use until 1998, and in 1999, it was demolished to make way for an expanded science hall.
