Wofford's alumni association resolved to build a student residence hall in memory of President James H. Carlisle following his death in 1909, Carlisle had served as president from 1875-1902. The dormitory opened in the fall of 1912, initially housing first and second year students. It remained in use as a residence until 1969. It was demolished in 1981. Another residence hall was subsequently dedicated to Carlisle.

The three-story brick structure was the college's first large-scale dormitory, and included a dining room for the campus. After 1969, it housed offices and a campus theater.
