A Coat of Arms that represents VMI

Title
Coat of Arms of Virginia Military Institute
Background and Context
The Coat of Arms of the Virginia Military Institute is the official symbol of VMI, awarded to the school in 1962 from the US Army Institute of Heraldry. In the US Army, every regiment has its own unique coat of arms that allows that unit to express pride in their unit's heritage. The VMI coat of arms represents the military and educational mission of VMI and celebrates the charge by the Corps of Cadets at the battle of New Market in 1864. The awarding of the coat of arms to VMI in the context of the backlash against the Civil Rights Movement in Virginia may have been a small act of defiance against the movement, commemorating VMI's support for the Confederacy.
Physical Description
The Coat of Arms is a shield with the original flag of Virginia to represent VMI’s history, two swords to represent the military culture of VMI, a lamp to represent the pursuit of learning, and a wreath to represent the “citizen-soldier” ideal of VMIs mission. Notably, the upper left quadrant of the shield features a black field with a broken golf chevron to represent the charge of the Corps of Cadets at the Battle of New Market in 1864.
