Initially named Phi Beta Kappa Hall when opened in 1926 in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the founding of Phi Beta Kappa. The name changed to Ewell Hall in 1957.
Although the Student Assembly asked for all buildings named after enslavers to be renamed in 2020, this building continues to be named after Ewell.
