Background and Context
In the spring and fall 2021, the Order of the Gown in conjunction with the Roberson Project placed a series of “Let’s Talk” posters in various campus buildings to encourage discussion of The University of the South’s building names associated with the Lost Cause: duPont Library honoring mid-twentieth-century segregationist Jessie Ball duPont; Quintard dormitory honoring enslaver and Confederate military chaplain Charles Todd Quintard; Elliott dormitory honoring enslaver and pro-slavery advocate Stephen Elliott; Walsh Ellett Hall honoring enslaver and Confederate military veteran Vincent Walsh; Gorgas dormitory honoring enslaver and Confederate military officer Josiah Gorgas and his son William C. Gorgas; and Gailor Hall honoring Lost Cause proponent Thomas Frank Gailor.
