The third Episcopal Bishop of Florida, Edwin Garden Weed served in the Confederate military and was active in supporting the Lost Cause.

Son of a Savannah merchant, Edwin Gardner Weed served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, after which he attended the University of Berlin and General Theological Seminary. For fifteen years, Weed was rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Augusta, Georgia, before his consecration as third Bishop of Florida in 1886. After the diocese of Florida was divided in 1892, Weed was Bishop of Northern Florida. He was a prominent and vocal supporter of "Lost Cause" through his affiliation with the Sons of Confederate Veterans and United Daughters of the Confederacy. His wife served two years as national president of United Daughters of the Confederacy. As bishop of an owning diocese of the Episcopal Church, Weed served as a trustee of the University of the South, including a term on its executive committee. His portrait hangs in Convocation Hall.
