Robert Dabney was a pastor, architect, businessman, and prolific author who helped develop the Lost Cause philosophy.

Robert Dabney was born in Louisa County, Virginia on March 5, 1820. He was the third oldest out of his siblings. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1837 and went on to the University of Virginia, from which he graduated with his master's in 1842. Robert Dabney was a pastor for several Presbyterian churches including Hampden-Sydney College Church. Robert Dabney met his wife, Margaret Lavinia Morrison, during his time as a pastor at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church near Hampen-Sydney College. Robert Lewis Dabney served in the Confederate Army, including as chief of staff for Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson. Robert Dabney wrote many books defending the Old South, slavery, and eventually the Lost Cause. He was also an architect who designed churches (Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, Briery Church, Briery VA, New Providence Presbyterian Church, Brownsburg, VA , and College Church, Hampden-Sydney College as well as Westmerton, his home on the HSC campus). He eventually retired to Victoria, Texas where he worked as a professor of moral and mental philosophy at the University of Texas until his death on January 3, 1898. In his will, he requested to be buried at Hampden-Sydney.
