Title
T.S. Staples History and Political Science Prize given to an outstanding history student; academic prize commemorating Thomas S. Staples
Background and Context
The Staples Prize for History and Political Science was named after Dr. Thomas Staples, an influential history professor at Hendrix College. Dr. Staples was a historian whose work promoted the Lost Cause and Dunning School ideals, and the prize was named for him in the year after his retirement. In the spring of 1950, the first award was given to the senior student with the highest GPA and comprehensive exam score. The department quietly retired the prize after a faculty member raised objections to the prize being named after Staples. In 2016, the prize was replaced with the Dr. James Jennings Prize, which is given to a graduating senior history major who contributes to the community of the department and the college. Dr. Jennings was the first African American faculty member in the Social Sciences at Hendrix College.
